As part of a coordinated International law enforcement campaign, the ransomware-as-a-service crimeware product NetWalker has been taken down. Previously the ransomware has been used to perform cybercrime by targeting many hospitals, schools, different private sector firms, and some of the government agencies.
A Canadian national was found to have connections with the previous NetWalker attacks and had been charged for this, confirmed by the US Department of Justice (DOJ). The DOJ also confirmed that approximately $454,530 in cryptocurrency from ransom payments had been seized. Moreover, the dark web resource that’s being used to communicate with NetWalker victims had now been disabled and a future restriction has also been made to this.
Nicholas L. McQuaid, Acting Assistant Attorney General of the Criminal Division from the Justice Department said they are strict to this type of criminal activity and striking back against the growing threat of ransomware. There working procedure not only includes bringing charges to such responsible actors but also disrupting all such criminal established online infrastructure. Also trying there best to recover as much as ransom payments deceived from those victims.
He further added that ransomware victims should never stay quiet if such an attack happen and immediately come forward to law enforcement as soon as possible.
NetWalker is well-known ransomware danger which is being operated using the ransomware-as-a-service model. Developers stand set to build the malware and further deploy against high-value accounts using different methods of the affiliate. After getting there desired ransom from these accounts, is then get divided between the affiliates and developers.
The NetWalker ransomware strain was found circulating from a long time, August 2019 and surprisingly at that time they transferred a total ransom of around $46 million. It’s also been said that if additional victims come forward about NetWalker attacks, there might be a possibility that many more criminal breakthrough can be attained.
It was not the first time when such action has been taken against such ransomware by the International law enforcement team worked together to perform such illegal online vrimal breakthrough. We might see more such actions taken on these activities in future confirmed by Bulgarian National Investigation Service.
