13 Reasons Why You Should Be Famous Tommy Dorfman has said openly that she is transsexual. The performer spoke up to the public about her journey and her feelings about coming out as a member of the LGBTQ+ community. In addition, the 29-year-old actor will direct a film adaptation of Mason Deaver’s I Wish You All The Best.

According to E! News, Tommy Dorfman, who plays Ryan Shaver in 13 Reasons Why, sat down for an interview with Torrey Peters. Dorfman spoke openly about her transition and said that she was only explaining her gender throughout the conversation.

When she expressed her desire to come out, she thought it was more of a reintroduction of herself as a woman following the surgical change. While ‘coming out is often seen to be a big disclosure of a person’s identity, Tommy disagreed, saying, “I was never not out.”

The actor said unequivocally that she is a trans woman and used the pronouns ‘She/her’.

The young actress also stated that people’s transformations and coming out journeys have influenced her. ‘I am truly me,’ she says, clarifying that she does not consider her ‘coming out’ to be a journey. She explained her decision to come out publicly by stating that she did not want to lose her identity’s story.

Tommy recognised that being a prominent person might limit her freedom if she refuses to tell the truth. She also admits to feeling overwhelmed when a series of heated debates erupted following her medical change. While some people choose to change their names after coming out, Tommy chose to keep hers since it is meaningful to her. 

Her mother’s brother, whom she described as “an uncle who went away while holding me,” inspired the star’s name. ‘I am getting more Tommy,’ she said, admitting to loving her name. She also declared unequivocally that she was proud of the person she was, despite the fact that she was living in a different version of herself. The star flamboyantly records her transition experience on Instagram after finally feeling safe to talk about it.

She made her acting debut in the short film Foreign Exchange in 2009, and since then has appeared in films such as In My Skin, i-Witness, Jane the Virgin, Insatiable, and Love in the Time of Corona.
