The film adaptation was inspired by Elena Ferrante’s 2006 novel of the same name. Ann Goldstein finished the English translation of La figlia oscura, which was first published in Italian as La figlia oscura, in 2008.
Maggie Gyllenhaal purchased the novel’s rights from the author in 2018 in preparation for a film adaptation.

The Lost Daughter’s Release Date Has Yet To Be Determined
The Lost Daughter will have its world premiere on September 3, 2021, at the 78th Venice International Film Festival. Maggie Gyllenhaal won the Golden Osella Award for Best Screenplay for her work on the film.
At the same time, the film was screened at the Telluride Film Festival, the Hamptons Film Festival, the Mill Valley Film Festival, and the Montclair Film Festival in New Jersey.
A number of countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom, have purchased Netflix’s rights to distribute the film in its entirety.
As a result, after a brief run in theatres, the film will be made available for viewing on streaming services as well. The Lost Daughter will be released in theatres and on Netflix on December 17, 2021.
