What is ‘Sonar Kella’ about?

Shonar Kella (সোনার কেল্লা) in Bengali language is a 1971 mystery novel written by Satyajit Ray. The novel was such a huge success that Raj decided to make a film adaptation of the novel. Not only one but two films were made on Feluda’s detective adventures. We’re talking about ‘Sonar Kella’ in this post. Sonar Kella came out on 27^th December, 1974. This movie was also released in the United States under the name ‘The Golden Fortress’.

The film begins with a school-going young boy named Mukul who is often plagued by the memories of his past life or some other alternate life which seems like he lived sometime. He is seen to be receiving a lot of media attention and a parapsychologist wants to help him with this. The name of the parapsychologist is mentioned as Dr. Hemanga Hajra who believes that this boy’s condition will help him in his research. Mukul is a very serious and humble boy who paints peacocks and forts at midnight while remembering his previous life. Mukul also mentioned that he used to live in a golden fortress (Sonar Kella) and revealed that he owned a lot of gems and jewels. Dr. Hajra decides to take Mukul on a trip to Rajasthan; the state of rich culture and forts so as to dig deeper into his memory. Meanwhile Amiyanath Barman and Mandar Bose, who are two frauds, plan to kidnap the young boy Mukul so that they can find and capture the treasure with the help of Mukul. Their first attempt at kidnapping went in vain as they kidnapped another boy named Mukul from the neighborhood. Upon hearing the news of this kidnap attempt, Mukul’s father hired a private investigator named Feluda to protect his son from any harm.

Now, Dr. Hajra is being followed by Feluda and Topshe on the way to Rajasthan. Meanwhile Dr. Hajra is attacked by the two murdering thugs who kidnapped Mukul and now are starting to impersonate themselves as Dr. Hajra for everyone. The story then follows the thugs and Feluda and how even if not knowing how the thugs or Dr. Hajra looks like, he was able to capture them. The movie will tell you if there was any treasure or whether it was yet another episode of psychological disorders!

Who are the makers of ‘Sonar Kella’?

The film is written and directed by Satyajit Ray. Satyajit Ray is the master of his arts, in this creation it can be said that just by the way of his narrating the suspense and thrillers. The way that only the lower half of the sinister thugs portrayed their shady character in the film and the end scene told their faces to the world which is a perfect example of the mastermind of Satyajit Ray. Speaking of film production… The film was produced by the government of West Bengal. The film was originally released in Bengali language.

The music score is yet another aspect of the remarkable job done by Satyajit Ray. It is seen that in Satyajit Ray’s earlier film, he worked with the maestros of music namely Ravi Shankar, Vilayat Khan and Ali Akbar Khan. But over time, given all due respect to the maestros, Ray realized that there are few limitations to the music of these masters which also came out as ideological differences with the concept of background score. He took the matters in his own hands for Sonar Kellar.

Soumitra Chatterjee was the legend of Indian cinema. He died recently on 15^th November, 2020 at the age of 85 years. His debut in ‘Apu’ trilogy by Satyajit Ray as the lead was one of his phenomenal works. He was Satyajit Ray’s favorite actor and this movie marked the beginning of his remarkable career, also a long-lasting partnership between the director and his beloved actor. Soumitra Chatterjee acted in 14 of Ray’s movies. Chatterjee’s acting career is much bigger that just his work with Satyajit Ray. He acted in more than 200 films and he was not just an actor but also director, playwright, writer, singer and poet. He left a huge legacy and we hope to see much of his work in the future portrayed by the young talents of our country!
