For those who haven’t seen it yet, the debut teaser for BBC One drama Ridley Road teases a gripping narrative about a young Jewish lady who goes undercover into a fascist organization during the 1960s.

The show is based on Jo Bloom’s 2015 novel of the same name and stars debutant Agnes O’Casey in the starring role of Vivien Epstein. Actress Sarah Solemani, who wrote an episode of HBO’s critically praised comedy-drama Barry in 2018, is now tackling the difficult task of bringing Ridley Road to the big screen.

In the recently released teaser, O’Casey appears to be playing a big breakout part as well as supporting roles for Eddie Marsan, Tracy Ann-Oberman, and Rory Kinnear as real-life fascist Colin Jordan.

Updates on Release Date

Even though a premiere date for Ridley Road hasn’t been announced just yet, the adaptation is expected to debut on BBC iPlayer “streaming soon,” according to a recent tweet from the BBC press office.

Although the project was initially revealed in August of 2019, work was put on hold when the Ebola outbreak broke out in the early months of the following year. As it turned out, production began in September 2020, and the final series is expected to have four hour-long episodes of the thrilling drama.

Updates on Casting Members

Agnes O’Casey, a newcomer to television, makes her television debut as Vivien Epstein after previously appearing in theatrical performances with the Irish acting school The Lir Academy. Sarah Solemani has blown me away with the precision, compassion, and complexity with which she has penned Vivien,” she remarked of her casting. I can’t wait to bring this important but little-known narrative to life.”

Jack Morris is portrayed by Tom Varey (Game of Thrones), while real-life fascist Colin Jordan, who commanded the NSM and was a renowned far-right speaker until his death in 2009, is portrayed by Rory Kinnear.

Ray Donovan’s E.J. Marsan (Ray Donovan) character, Soly Malinovsky (Eddie Marsan), leads an anti-fascist group known as the 62 Group and gives Vivien her perilous assignment. Samantha Spiro from “Sex Education,” Tamzin Outhwaite from “EastEnders,” and Rita Tushingham from “Friday Night Dinner” round out the supporting cast (A Taste of Honey).

Updates on Storyline

Adapted to Jo Bloom’s novel, the narrative is based on the anti-fascist coalition known as the 62 Group’s fight against postwar British neo-Nazism. Vivien Epstein, a young Jewish lady from Manchester who has just lost her father, tells the story of her migration to East London in 1962 in Ridley Road.

She tries to find Jack Morris, a guy with whom she previously had a passionate love affair, but she is unsuccessful — at least initially. After landing a job at a Soho hair salon, Vivien joins the anti-fascist struggle in London and is chosen to join Colin Jordan’s neo-Nazi National Socialist Movement (NSM).

It’s a risky expedition that will put her face to face with the fascist leader and her long-lost love, Jack, and screenwriter Solemani hopes it will raise awareness about fascism’s current threat in the UK.
