Researchers Transform Plant Roots Into Battery-Like Energy Storage Devices

A rising emphasis, on the other hand, is being placed on the development of more efficient energy storage systems.

It was revealed by researchers from a Swedish university that there was a store in the most improbable of locations.

Furthermore, they were able to demonstrate the ability of plant roots to store energy.

In order for their method to work, they must hydrate the plants with a specific solution that also serves as an electrical conductor.

The research at Linkoping University is a proof-of-concept experiment that blends biological and electronic processes in a single experiment.

Researchers such as Dr. Eleni Stavrinidou and her Electronic Plants Group have built on the work of previous researchers in this field.

Plants were successfully converted into electrical conductors

After creating electrical circuits in rose vascular tissue in 2015, Stavrinidou went on to use the circuits to fabricate transistors.

Moreover, the plants were successfully converted into electrical conductors that could store energy two years after they were planted.

As Stavrinidou, an online science newspaper reported, the plant cuttings would only be viable for a few days after they were taken.

As a result, they were able to demonstrate that when complete plants are irrigated with an oligomer solution, they may conduct electricity.

 Furthermore, the watering solution polymerizes the conjugated oligomer ETE-S.

That will result in the creation of a thin coating on the surface of the plant.

This procedure transforms the root system into conductors that can remain active for up to four weeks after the procedure is completed.

The scientists observed that the plant was capable of storing 100 times the energy of prior systems that relied exclusively on the plant’s stems.

So, with little impact on the plant’s health, allowing the system to be utilized for longer periods of time without compromising its performance.
