Last year, the government made some amendments to existing IT rules, which allowed users of Netflix and Prime Videos to complain about the content they watched on the streaming platforms.

But here is the turning point, as per the IT rules the subscribers have been given the right to complain since 2021, but according to the recent survey, both Netflix and Prime Video have dismissed every single complaint it received.

Let’s dig deeper!

There’s an industry body representing all these OTT services named Digital Publisher Content Grievances Council (DPCGC). This was set up by the Internet and Mobile Association of India and also operates on social media such as Facebook, Instagram, companies, fintech firms, and other digital companies.

One redressal board is also established to compensate all those who are not satisfied with the outcomes. It is chaired by the retired Supreme Court Judge Arjan Kumar Sikri and a chairman named Karan Bedi who also shares the post of MX Player CEO.

Till today, a total of twelve complaints have been registered from different users but not even a single one is resolved. The council didn’t even make the complaints public and only prepared monthly statistics available.

Because of the registered complaints, Netflix and Prime didn’t restrict a single series or movie and it seems like the complaints didn’t affect the Managers.

Reasons for low complaints!

The low number of complaints indicates that maybe DPCGC hides some complaints as it seems impossible to have only 12 complaints in ten months. Both OTT platforms are focusing more on making thrilling spicy content rather than thinking about the religious and political fault lines.

Aman Taneja who is a Principal Associate at Ikigai Law added that another reason behind the less number of complaints is low public awareness of IT rules provisions. Many of the users don’t even know that they have a right to complain about any inappropriate content.

About all the OTT Platforms!

DPCGC covers almost all the known streaming platforms, here is the list; Netflix, Apple TV+, Eros Now, Mubi, Lionsgate Play, Hoichoi, MX Player, Shemaroo, Ullu, Amazon Prime Video, AMC+, and BookMyShow Stream.

Other OTT platforms such as Disney+ Hotstar, Sony LIV, and Zee5 have joined the Indian Broadcasting Foundation’s Digital Media Content Regulatory Council rather than DPCGC.

Hence share this price of news more and more to create awareness among the users, comment honestly whether you knew about the rule or not and also stay in touch to get more fresh updates! ‘
