THE REVIEW

As we just told you, “Mixtape” is about a 12-year-old girl named Beverly who lives with her grandmother Gail. Her parents died when she was younger in a car accident. Set in the world of the 1980s and 1990s, the girl finds out a mixtape prepared by her parents. Even though the mixtape is destroyed, it bears the names of the songs her parents used to listen to. Desperate to know her parents better, Beverly sets out on an adventure to seek out the songs mentioned on the mixtape. Her grandmother disapproves though as she lost her daughter and the girl’s mother due to the mixtape. Her daughter apparently married a musician at a very early age and became a mother while still a teen. She died with her husband in a car crash. Due to this reason, Gail wants to keep Beverly away from music for her safety. But Beverly does not listen and finds out about the songs on the mixtape with the help of her friends and a record store owner.

The movie is full of sweetness. Both Gemma Brooke Allen and Julie Brown blend into the characters of Beverly and Gail respectively, effortlessly. The songs chosen for the mixtape are good enough but the first song on the list does not really dial in but apart from that, the rest of the songs hold just fine. The movie has a very happy environment and ending. The storytelling has some hiccups but the songs even out that as well.

Overall, “Mixtape” is worth watching for the songs that are in there.
