Natpe Thunai (Friendship is Guidance) is a 2019 Indian Tamil-language musical sports film directed by D. Parthiban Desingu in his directorial debut, with the story, screenplay, and dialogues written by Sreekanth Vasrp and Devesh Jeyachandran.
The film stars Adhi, newcomer Anagha, and Karu Pazhaniappan, as well as actors Harish Uthaman, Sha Ra, Pandiarajan, and Kausalya, and is produced by Sundar C. and Kushboo under the banner Avni Movies. It is focused on the hockey sport.
After Meesaya Murukku, this is Adhi’s second film as a leading man (2017). He also scored the music, with cinematography and editing done by Aravinnd Singh and Fenny Oliver, respectively.
Release
The film received mixed reviews upon its release on April 4, 2019, but it was a box office success.
Plot
Prabhakaran (Adhi) is a cheerful Pondicherry teen whose sole goal is to travel to France. He travels to Karaikal for this reason, but he falls in love with Deepa (Anagha), a hockey player, while there.
He meets Shanmugam (Harish Uthaman), a kindhearted retired military man who is the coach of the local hockey team, through her.
The ground where Shanmugam’s players practise is being pursued by a corporation, which is aided by local politician Harichandran (Karu Pazhaniappan).
Later, after filing an RTI request about the venture, Shanmugam learns about the corporate company’s proposal to build a factory in the land, polluting the local rivers and endangering the nearby villagers.
Shanmugam’s students can now join the Pondicherry hockey team and win the match to save the ground from the corporate and Harichandran. While choosing hockey players for his squad, he learns that Prabha was the captain of the Indian Junior World Cup hockey team in 2012 and was suspended for three years.
When Shanmugam invites Prabha to join their hockey team and help them win the game, he declines and explains his reasons for leaving the sport.
Prabha and his childhood friend Azhar (Guhan Prakash) are both hockey players. In his unit, Prabha is an attacker, while Azhar is a defence player.
After being selected by national selectors, Prabha is accepted into the Indian hockey team and later becomes the captain of the Indian hockey team at the 2012 Junior World Cup competition, but Azhar is rejected from the Indian hockey team and inquires about it with his coach (Elango Kumaravel), who mocks his desire to play hockey as well as his financial situation and instead tells him to assist his father in his fishing business.
As a result of this, Azhar commits suicide as a result of his grief, and one of Prabha’s friends (RJ Vigneshkanth) loses his leg while attempting to save him from an oncoming train. When Prabha learns of this, he becomes enraged and assaults his coach, for which he is suspended for three years.
Shanmugam later tries to protest the corporate company’s unit being built there with the aid of his students and the locals, but Harichandran uses dirty tactics to keep Shanmugam from succeeding in his protest.
Later, Harichandran meets up with Prabha’s former coach in order to prevent Shanmugam’s team from winning the hockey tournament.
After seeing the plight of the locals, Prabha agrees to join the hockey team and help them get back on their feet. Shanmugam and Prabha prepare the players, and after overcoming numerous obstacles, they win the match and reclaim their property.
When they return to the field, they see Harichandran (who has since lost his position) giving a press conference, expressing his delight at Shanmugam’s victory.
He approaches Prabha and accuses the common people of voting for leaders who receive monetary benefits, and he asks Prabha if the people would elect someone who is doing good for them without receiving any money, a question to which Prabha is unable to respond.
