Michael Nesmith, Monkees Guitarist, And Singer, Dies At The Age Of 78

According to his family in a statement, Michael Nesmith died peacefully and of natural causes this morning at his home. The love and light you have shown him and we are greatly appreciated.

From 1966 through 1968, NBC aired The Monkees, a television sitcom about the travails of a fledgling rock band. The show and the band became household names thanks to two Emmy Awards and a run of best-sellers. Last Train to Clarksville, Daydream Believer, and Pleasant Valley Sunday was among their most successful tunes. Nesmith wrote the songs Mary, Mary, Listen to the Band, and The Girl I Knew Somewhere.

The “Pre-Fab Four” moniker was a parody of the Beatles’ “Fab Four” moniker for the Monkees. Nesmith was already a well-known musician when he was cast in The Monkees.

Different Drum was a huge hit for Linda Ronstadt when she recorded it in 1965. After his tenure on the show ended, his solo albums in the early days of videos established him an essential player. In the late 1970s, he founded PopClips, a forerunner to MTV.

That I was the solitary musician was one of those urban legends that spread like wildfire — but it wasn’t true.”. According to Rolling Stone, he said. “Micky Dolenz (who could play, sing, and dance), Davy Jones (who could play the piano), and Peter Gabriel were all more talented than I was” (Tork).

We were confident in our ability to perform the songs chosen for the show, thanks in large part to Micky’s newly discovered expertise on the drum set.”

Nesmith’s wool hat from his audition for The Monkees TV show was apparently part of the character’s costume when he was cast. In an early TV listing, Nesmith’s character was just referred to as “Wool Hat,” with the comment that “he regularly wears one.” Mike was eventually picked as the character’s new name.

“What a pity,” remarked Frank Conniff, a former cast member of Mystery Science Theater 3000. It is not ideal to lose the Monkees at this moment. This guy appeared to have a lot of potentials. When are you going to do the right thing and honor these national treasures, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? Michael Nesmith, please rest in peace.”
