After a brief delay, the House of the Dragon is ready to take flight. The prequel to HBO’s Game of Thrones about the Targaryen dynasty is presently in development, however, work was recently halted owing to a positive COVID-19 test.
House of the Dragon will be back on track for a 2022 release once filming restarts. The cast has already been seen on-site, and HBO has published official photographs, including one of Matt Smith dressed as a Targaryen prince (looking very different from his other royal role, Prince Philip on The Crown).
Winter has passed on Game of Thrones, which ended its eight-season run in May of this year. HBO wants to capitalize on the success of its most popular program, so it began creating five possible Game of Thrones spinoffs. They took one step forward: House of the Dragon.
The birth of House of the Dragon was a long and tortuous path. HBO initially chose a completely different idea for a spinoff set during the Age of Heroes. However, after filming a pilot with Naomi Watts, the project was canceled.
Then HBO surprised everyone by announcing that it has ordered 10 episodes of House of the Dragon. The show is based on George R.R. Martin’s fantasy novel “Fire & Blood,” which follows the House of Targaryen’s reign from Aegon I Targaryen’s invasion of Westeros some 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones.
Co-showrunners will include Colony writer Ryan Condal and Game of Thrones veteran director Miguel Sapochnik. Sapochnik directed Emmy-winning episodes of Game of Thrones, including Hardhome, The Long Night, and Battle of the Bastards. Here’s all we’ve learned thus far about House of the Dragon.
Updates on filming for the new spin-off House of the Dragon
Due to a positive COVID-19 test among the cast and crew, filming on House of the Dragon was halted for a few days. After isolation and quarantine, production will restart. After being spotted in leaked set images, Graham McTavish (Outlander, The Hobbit) has confirmed he’ll be in House of the Dragon. Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen and the Sea Snake are among the cast members who have received official character pictures from HBO.
Rumors about the release date of House of the Dragon
The release date for House of the Dragon is unknown, but HBO has a rough notion of when the show will broadcast. In October of this year, HBO announced the series order.
The initial casting rounds began in late July 2020. However, there are still several processes to be completed: filming, editing, and visual effects. Because a Targaryen-focused series will have to feature dragons, the latter may take a long time.
In January 2020, HBO President of Programming Casey Bloys told Deadline, “My estimate is sometime in 2022.” “Clearly, it’s a large, intricate play.
According to Casey Bloys, HBO and HBO Max’s chief content officer, production will begin in April. Consider this if it’s even somewhat as complex as Game of Thrones: Season 8 took nine months to shoot, and another nine months to air. If House of the Dragon follows a similar timetable, we’re looking at a March or April 2022 publication date. That would make sense, given that nearly every season of Game of Thrones premiered during those months.
