After everything shut down in the early days of the epidemic, “Archive 81” re-started film production in Pittsburgh. Finally, we know when we’ll all be able to see the finished product.

The first season of Netflix’s “Archive 81,” which is based on the found-footage horror podcast of the same name, will premiere on January 14. The streaming site also released the first batch of photographs from the set of “Archive 81.”

According to the show’s storyline description on Netflix’s press site, the series follows archivist Dan Turner (Mamoudou Athie), who takes a job fixing a collection of damaged videotapes from 1994. “Reconstructing the work of Melody Pendras (Dina Shihabi), a documentary filmmaker, he is dragged into the investigation of a hazardous cult at the Visser apartment complex.

“As the season progresses between these two universes, Dan becomes increasingly preoccupied with figuring out what happened to Melody. Dan becomes certain that he can save her from the horrific death she faced 25 years ago when the two characters create a mystical connection.”

Showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine and executive producer James Wan, who directed the horror films “Insidious” and “The Conjuring,” are among those behind the project. Matt McGorry, Martin Donovan, Ariana Neal, Julia Chan, and Evan Jonigkeit round out the major cast.

“Archive 81,” along with the Netflix series “The Chair,” was instrumental in reviving film and television production in Western Pennsylvania. Before shooting concluded in March, the team was seen recording episodes on many times in the fall of 2020 and winter of 2021.

The Bayard Rustin biopic “Rustin” and the Christian Bale murder thriller “The Pale Blue Eye” are now filming in the area for Netflix.
