Drishti’s Bengaluru R&D team’s technology is assisting companies in closing a 100-year-old data gap in manufacturing.

Global manufacturers have embraced technology developed by a Bengaluru-based R&D unit to close a century-old data gap in manufacturing, including three of the world’s six largest auto OEMs, including Toyota, and two of the world’s three largest electronics contract manufacturers.

Drishti Technologies, which monitors thousands of workers at the same time, has a Bengaluru facility with 120 employees, including contract workers. Technology generates new types of data, which are converted into information to assist factories in improving efficiency or quality.

Drishti’s software uses computer vision to capture real-time video footage and then applies deep learning to label various types of manual labour, allowing it to be digitised.

Drishti’s CTO and co-founder, Krishnendu Chaudhury, told  that “basically, we install cameras that observe what’s going on.” They send video to our cloud, which is home to our neural networks and AI engine. You can use these to analyse videos and do two things: To begin, we monitor employee actions on the floor and can send out alerts if a specific action is missed. Because we get duration statistics, it leads to a lot of efficiency and bottleneck discoveries.”

Imagine the consequences if a mechanic working on brake pads at a car dealership forgets to tighten a nut. This never happens as a result of Drishti’s deep learning and AI tools, which provide an early warning and allow the worker to make an immediate correction.

“…Training could be another application for our technology,” says Gary Jackson, CEO of Drishti. Toyota, for example, spends a significant portion of its labour costs on training and retraining. It is possible that there is insufficient training between someone who can do something in a minute and someone who can do it in 30 seconds, or that someone discovers a better way to do it. In any case, our type of analysis, which focuses on the training cycle, can provide significant financial benefit to clients.”

COVID-19 Analysis

Chaudhury cites examples such as finding ways to speed up manufacturing processes and detecting bottlenecks before they disrupt production. This technology was used to alleviate crowding in the lines at the Covid-19.

While the majority of Drishti’s employees are based in Bengaluru, Ramana Tadepalli, the company’s head of India operations, stated that customer privacy and IP protection were taken into serious consideration when the technology was developed.

Because the data generated belongs to the customer, it takes a lot of effort to ensure that privacy is protected at all levels. We are extremely sensitive to the fact that it is confidential, and much of it is asset and intellectual property.

According to Jackson, a $25 million Series B funding round led by Sozo Ventures has been completed. According to the firm, other firms involved included Andreessen Horowitz, Toyota AI Ventures, Emergence Capital, and Alpha Intelligence Capital.

According to Tadepalli, this could be useful for industries or specific sectors in the future. Drishti may investigate anonymizing and analysing data.
