Lights Out is a 2016 American psychological horror movie directed by F. Sandberg, produced by Lawrence Grey, James Wan, and Eric Heisserer, and scripted by Eric Heisserer. Teresa Palmer, Gabriel Bateman, Billy Burke, and Maria Bello feature in it. It is inspired by Sandberg’s little movie from 2013, and it stars Lotta Losten, who still features in the short.
In the film, a young lady must confront her childhood anxieties in order to defend her brother from a malevolent supernatural creature with an unfathomable connection to their mother. Sandberg announced a cinematic adaptation based on his short film after its popularity. The film’s principal photography began in June 2015 in Los Angeles. Filming was completed on August 5, 2015.
The film made its world premiere on June 8, 2016, at the Los Angeles Film Festival, and was released on July 22, 2016, by Warner Bros. in the United States and Canada. Plot
During the closing hours of a textile plant, an employee called Esther sees a silhouette of a weird lady with claw-like hands when the lights are turned out but cannot see it when the lights are turned on. After she has left, her employer Paul runs into the lady and is killed.
Rebecca, Paul’s stepdaughter, is summoned to the school nurse’s office due to her brother, Martin. Rebecca and Martin are half-siblings who share a mother, Sophie.
The nurse was unable to reach Sophie in order to notify her that Martin had been falling asleep in class recently. Rebecca is questioned about Martin’s living situation by a Child Protective Services official. Rebecca informs the official that Sophie suffers from depression and is on antidepressants.
Martin informs his sister that their mother has been speaking with a woman known as “Diana.” Rebecca tells him that Diana is not real, and that she, too, heard their mother speak to the fictitious girl when she was a youngster. When Rebecca finds her mother isn’t taking her medicine, she gets into a fight with Sophie and takes Martin to her apartment.
Rebecca is awakened that night by the same dark lady who murdered Paul. She nearly avoids an assault as she flicks on the lights, causing the lady to vanish. The following morning, she discovers the name “Diana” scratched into her floor, along with a scratch sketch of a stick figure. Diana is genuine since she remembers discovering the same name and painting as a youngster.
In Paul’s office, Rebecca discovers a box containing medical records and studies. His research reveals that her mother was admitted to a psychiatric hospital when she was a toddler. She made friends with a young patient called Diana while she was there.
Diana had a terrible skin problem that prevented her from going outside in the sun, and she was accidently murdered by medical workers when they conducted an experimental procedure on her in high light. She was thought to be malevolent and capable of “getting into people’s thoughts.” Diana’s father committed himself after Diana went inside his thoughts and convinced him to commit himself.
Rebecca, her boyfriend Bret, and Martin confront Sophie about how she is allowing Diana to haunt them. Sophie feels enraged, but privately seeks Rebecca’s assistance since Diana would not let her go. The gang spends the night at Sophie’s in the hopes of enlisting her assistance in the morning.
To evade Diana’s onslaught during the night, they set up the house to be as well-lit as possible. This is rendered ineffective when Diana turns off the electricity to the neighbourhood. She imprisons Rebecca and Martin in the basement and tries to murder Bret. Bret flees by shining his car’s headlights and appears to forsake the others.
Rebecca discovers a black light in the basement; when she clearly sees Diana with it, she knows it is not powerful enough to damage her, but she does not disappear in it and can be gravely injured if a strong light shines on her while the black light is still shining on her.
Bret reappears, accompanied by two police policemen. Martin and Rebecca are rescued from the basement by the authorities.
The cops notice Diana’s shadow as well, but she kills them. Rebecca and Martin go out, but Martin insists on bringing their mother along. She sends Martin and Bret away and returns home to find her mother.
Diana informs Rebecca as she climbs the stairs that she murdered Rebecca’s father years ago. Sophie emerges with a pistol from one of the deceased police as Diana prepares to shoot her. Sophie realizes she is Diana’s lifeline in the real world and sacrifices herself to save Rebecca. Diana fades from existence as her body falls.
Bret consoles Martin and Rebecca in an ambulance outside the home after a hard night, informing them that Diana is indeed gone.
