Agent Sai Srinivasa Athreya is a comedy-thriller film directed by Swaroop RSJ and produced by Rahul Yadav Nakka that was released in India in 2019. Naveen Polishetty, Shruti Sharma, and Suhas play the titular characters in the film. It follows a detective from Nellore whose life is put in jeopardy when he begins investigating the case of a dead body found along a railway track.
The film, which opened in theatres on June 21, 2019, received overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics and performed well at the box office. At the Zee Cine Awards Telugu, the film received three awards.
Plot
Agent Sai Sreenivas Athreya wakes up in the middle of the night to the death of his mother, a personal tragedy. When he returns from college in Bhopal, he discovers that his mother has already been cremated by his uncle.
After three years, he becomes a detective in Nellore, where he sets up FBI operations (Fathima Bureau of Investigation). Sneha, his assistant, assists him in situations. Athreya spends much of her time resolving minor issues. Sirish, a writer acquaintance, tells him one day that an unidentified body has been discovered in Venkatachalam.
When he arrives, the cops detain him on suspicion of murder. Athreya meets a man named Maruthi Rao in jail that night and tells him the story of his daughter Divya, who went missing after visiting Ongole.
He gives him the phone numbers of three people who were the last to contact Divya before her alleged murder. Ajay, Harsha, and Vasudha are three friends. Athreya and Sneha confirm that Ajay and Harsha were in Ongole on the day Divya was murdered, based on phone numbers, while Vasudha is untraceable.
They spend the whole day following them as they visit a car rental agency, a mortuary, and a railroad. At the end of the day, Athreya spots Divya, who doesn’t speak Telugu and ignores him, somewhere along a highway. When they search the Nellore police station, they discover that no Maruti Rao has been moved from the rural station in the previous three days.
When they arrive at the rural station, they discover that the man who claimed to be Maruti Rao is Gopalam. Further investigation with the Ongole police station reveals that the body discovered on the day Divya was believed to be dead was the male body.
Athreya discovers Ajay’s gruesome murder at a Dhaba later, and he is immediately arrested as the prime suspect.
Due to CCTV proof that he was in Venkatachalam calling for Maruthi Rao, Athreya is released on bail, but he only has five days to prove his innocence due to the overwhelming evidence against him.
Someone tries to kill Athreya when Agent and Sneha investigate Harsha’s house for clues. Harsha wanted the details of Athreya after seeing him being arrested in Venkatachalam, and he explains his theory to the police of the Nellore rural station. Meanwhile, a father files a missing child report, and the missing child is Vasudha, who turns out to be deceased.
Athreya then captures Bobby, who has been trailing Agent around, but Bobby, like Agent, is an investigator who has been fed false information that Athreya is the true murderer. Athreya deduces that there is a massive conspiracy when she notices bodies dumped alongside the railway track between Kakinada and Tada stations.
He deduces that the bodies are loaded into a freight train. He sees the bodies being loaded into the goods train at Arambakkam, Tamil Nadu, using this detail. After faking his death to fool the people chasing him, he goes to Arambakkam with the aid of a police officer, Bobby, and Sneha.
He captures Gopalam in Arambakkam, who reveals the whole plot: someone has been stealing dead bodies from Hindu families under the guise of transporting them to Kashi, a holy place where the dead are cremated, for money, and then dumping them next to railroad tracks. Since his uncle sent his mother’s body to Kashi, he discovers that his mother’s body has also been discarded in this manner.
Following an emotional breakdown, Athreya discovers that the fingerprints of the deceased man in Venkatachalam match those of a killer in Gujarat, and deduces that they are even stealing the fingerprints of dead bodies to use in crimes.
The people behind this wanted Athreya and Bobby to be set up so they wouldn’t notice the Bethaballi Amman’s (a religious NGO) talismans on the dead bodies that were meant to be removed before they were disposed of.
Meanwhile, Sneha and the cop discover that Ajay, Harsha, and Vasudha worked together on a college project about religious crimes in India, and they collect the materials as well as their images. Looking through the images, Athreya notices that Vasudha’s dead body had a tattoo from childhood, while Vasudha in the photo does not.
Vasudha and her father are later revealed to be in charge of the entire operation. Since Ajay, Harsha, and Athreya discovered the body with the talisman, Vasudha planned to kill Ajay and Harsha and set up Agent so that no one could link the dead body to her.
After arriving at the Bethabali Amman NGO’s office to find it deserted, Athreya deduces that Vasudha has fled to Rajasthan, where she is apprehended and handed over to the police. Athreya bids Bobby farewell while he and Sneha continue to work on small cases.
