Crime and fire report: Squatters lived in cabin, didn’t make beds and left moldy food out for the owner to find

A caller reported their Detroit Lakes cabin was broken into and the parties lived there for a time. The beds weren’t made and the caller believed they had been slept in. Moldy food was left out for the owner to find.

The following reports were compiled from the Becker County Sheriff’s Office and Detroit Lakes Police Department from an official with knowledge of the cases, unless otherwise noted.

Thursday, Jan. 21

At 8:01 a.m., on the 1300 block of Corbett Avenue, Detroit Lakes, chimney fire.

At 9:03 a.m., on the 600 block of Highway 10, Detroit Lakes, a small flatbed trailer was stolen from behind a business.

At 11:05 a.m., on the 200 block of Broadway Avenue, Detroit Lakes, a caller reported a possible ID theft. The caller has not reported the loss of any money from their accounts.

At 4:20 p.m., on the 100 block of State Street, Detroit Lakes, a caller reported a marijuana smell coming from a neighbor’s apartment. The caller said the occupant is burning incense to cover up the smell.

Friday, Jan. 22

At 1:14 p.m., on the 11000 block of Ravenswood Beach Road, Detroit Lakes, a cabin was broken into. The caller said it looked like people slept in the beds and left out food that became moldy. No items were reported missing.

At 3:19 p.m., on the 300 block of West Main Street, Frazee, a small amount of residue was found in a baggy with some money. The residue tested negative for methamphetamine.

At 4:17 p.m., on the 500 block of 11th Avenue, Detroit Lakes, a mobile phone was stolen out of a backpack.

At 9:09 p.m., at Walmart at 1583 Highway 10, Detroit Lakes, a disabled vehicle was stolen from the parking lot.

Saturday, Jan. 23

At 9:06 a.m., on the 100 block of North Lake Street, Frazee, an assault was reported. Two male parties were involved.

At 12:36 p.m., on the 400 block of Morrow Avenue, Detroit Lakes, a gas station drive off occurred.

Sunday, Jan. 24

At 2:53 a.m., on the 51000 block of Old Mill Drive, Osage, a pickup truck was reported on fire in a driveway. The vehicle was totally engulfed before being extinguished by firefighters. The fire is believed to have started in the engine.

At 9:26 a.m., on Highway 10, near mile marker 51, Detroit Lakes, single vehicle rollover accident.

At 10:20 a.m., at Walmart at 1583 Highway 10, Detroit Lakes, a shoplifter was reported.

At 2:09 p.m., on the 100 block of Barbara Avenue, Detroit Lakes, a shoplifter was reported at the laundromat.

Monday, Jan. 25

At 8:07 a.m., on the 45000 block of Highway 87, Frazee, a neighbor reportedly cut down a birch tree from the caller’s yard.

At 10:38 a.m., on the 55000 block of Highway 34, Osage, a party damaged the mirrors of the caller’s vehicle on purpose.

At 3:53 p.m., on the 200 block of West Maple Avenue, Frazee, a package theft occurred. The caller reported some of the package contents were left and some was stolen.

At 4:06 p.m., on the 500 block of Balsam Avenue, Frazee, a caller reported unauthorized use of their PayPal account. $300 was spent without the account holder’s permission.
