CC2C (short for Chandni Chowk to China) is a 2009 Indian Hindi-language action comedy film directed by Nikkhil Advani and starring Akshay Kumar and Deepika Padukone. Mithun Chakraborty and Hong Kong action cinema actor Gordon Liu also star.
Many parts of the film were filmed in Bangkok, Thailand, in addition to China, while some of the China scenes were shot on sets at the Shanghai Film Studio.
The story follows a vegetable cutter from Delhi’s Chandni Chowk who embarks on an adventure in China after inhabitants of an impoverished village believe he is the reincarnation of a slain Chinese revolutionary.
Following Sony’s Saawariya (2007) and Walt Disney Pictures’ animated feature Roadside Romeo, it is the third Bollywood film made and released in collaboration with a major Hollywood studio, following Sony’s Saawariya (2007) and Walt Disney Pictures’ animated feature Roadside Romeo (2008).
It is the first Hindi film produced by Warner Bros. Pictures. It was the third highest-grossing film of the year at the Indian Box Office when it was released on January 16, 2009.
Plot
Despite his foster father Dada’s (Mithun Chakraborty) warnings, Sidhu (Akshay Kumar) works as a lowly vegetable cutter at a roadside food stall in Delhi’s Chandni Chowk neighborhood.
He consults astrologers, tarot card readers, and fake fakirs. Sidhu, inspired by trickster Chopstick (Ranvir Shorey), believes he will be feted as a hero when two strangers from China declare him as a reincarnation of war hero ‘Liu Shen’ and take him to China, Sidhu believes he will be feted as a hero, unaware of his recruitment to assassinate smuggler Hojo (Gordon Liu).
With Chopstick, Sidhu flies to China. He meets Sakhi (Deepak Padukone), the Indian-Chinese spokesmodel known as Ms.
Tele Shoppers Media, or Ms. TSM, who also appears in China, along the way. Her twin sister Suzy, known as the femme fatale Meow Meow, works for Hojo, not knowing Hojo tried to kill her boss, Inspector Chiang (Roger Yuan) (Roger Yuan).
Sidhu initially eludes Hojo due to a series of mishaps. Sidhu, on the other hand, discovers the truth about his personality. Sidhu apologizes to Hojo, who is devastated.
Dada appears and begins beating up on Hojo’s men, but Hojo kills Dada, exposing Sidhu as a loser. Hojo even beats him and urinates on him. Sidhu vows vengeance after being injured and humiliated.
Sidhu meets an amnesiac vagrant three months later, whom he later recognizes as Inspector Chiang. Chiang regains his memory and begins training Sidhu in kung fu.
Suzy injures Chiang when Hojo meets with Sidhu again, but betrays Hojo when she sees Sakhi. Sidhu battles Hojo one-on-one, finally defeating him with a tweaked vegetable-cutting technique.
Sidhu finally kills Hojo after a long fight. Following this, Sidhu establishes a vegetable stall in China before being recruited to fight for some African pygmies.
Reception at the box office
On its first weekend, Chandni Chowk in China made a profit of 330 million rupees (US$4.6 million).
It made a total of 407 million rupees (US$5.7 million) in India.
The film’s total North American box office gross was $921,738, and its total worldwide gross was $13,439,480 in its four weeks of release. The movie earned a Flop rating.
Interesting facts about the movie
“Mera Naam Chin Chin Choo” was the original title of the film, which was later changed to “Mad in China.”
This is the first Indian film to be filmed in China.
This film is semi-autobiographical, according to Akshay Kumar: Sidhu is a cook who grew up in Chandni Chowk, Delhi, just like Kumar.
