Awkwafina, the star of Shang-Chi, talks the Blaccent scandal

As Goh Peik Lin in Crazy Rich Asians and as Constance in Ocean’s 8, actress Awkwafina addressed the Blaccent issue surrounding her portrayals in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

According to The Blaccent, adopting an allegedly Black voice by non-Black individuals invites cultural appropriation accusations (via Reuters Showbiz). She said, “Um… You know, I’m open to the idea,” in response to his question. In other words, it’s something that has several faces and facets, therefore.

Although it’s a limited approach, it does at least allow for further debate of the issue. Also lately, in other news, in a possible sequel to the historic Marvel film released earlier this month, Awkwafina stated that her character Katy’s relationship with Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi/Shaun will remain platonic.

According to Katy, the two women share a “really, really deep relationship” that is based on dedication, blind trust, and an underlying understanding on Katy’s part. “I think Shaun and Katy have a wonderful relationship because they support each other, love each other in their own ways, and they have this carefree attitude around each other,” Liu added.

If you think it romantic or not, it is entirely up to you. Their Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) characters’ whereabouts remain a mystery. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, in which he plays Bruce Willis, is currently playing in theatres.
