60% Of Georgians Oppose Delta Merger
(11/15/07) An InsiderAdvantage / Majority Opinion flash telephone
survey of 300 Georgians with a margin of error of plus or minus
6 percent shows overwhelming opposition to a merger of Delta Air
Lines with United Air Lines.
The question: "Do You favor or oppose a merger of Delta Air
Lines with United Air Lines?"
The results:
Oppose: 60%
Favor: 37%
Undecided: 3%
The survey was conducted the evening of Nov. 14 and was weighted
for age, race, gender and political affiliation.
InsiderAdvantage CEO Matt Towery: “The most interesting part
of this survey is the fact that it did not mention the possibility
of any potential merger resulting in Delta’s headquarters
moving to Chicago. Obviously, with both Delta and United denying
having any talks and details being sketchy, it would have been highly
prejudicial to include that aspect in the survey. Nevertheless,
the mere concept of a merger is overwhelmingly opposed by most Georgians.
This may be a result of fears over the sheer size of such a potentially
combined airline or any other number of intangible factors. My guess
is, had we polled this issue with even a hint of the headquarters
moving to Chicago, the numbers would have been catastrophic for
any Delta-United merger. I should also note, this survey resulted
in one of the lowest undecided percentages that I have ever seen
over a news-related story. This suggests that opinions are very
strong on this issue.”
